About Us
The Kingdom of the Sun Concert Band is proud to have just completed our 21st season. Originally known as Mid-Florida Symphonic Band, the band was organized in March, 1990 under the direction of Carlton Hughes. During the band's second season, the current name was adopted, which we share with the city and county where the band is based: Greater Ocala / Marion County, Florida, known as the "Kingdom of the Sun". Les Muncaster joined the band in 1998 and is the current conductor and music director.
Sponsored in part by Community Technical and Adult Education of Marion County, the all-volunteer organization has grown from 30 members in 1990 to the present 85+ members, ranging in age from 14 to 92. Their musical experience is as varied as their occupations - from professional musicians and music educators to college professors, from high school students to engineers, psychologists, to orthodontists, all coming together through a shared love of music.
The band rehearses every Monday evening throughout the year at Marion Technical Institute in Ocala, with several performances at venues in Marion County, all of which are free and open to the public. The band's repertoire offers a wide variety of music including marches, big band medleys, classical, popular music, show tunes, and patriotic tributes.
Please join us as we begin our exciting 22nd season. You'll be sure to leave with a song in your heart. Click here to view the band's performance schedule and maps of our performance venues. If you would like to add your name to our patron mailing list, please click here to access our Patron page.
